First experiments printing with Sub ink….

August 25th, 2010

You may have seen the some posts about the new Sub ink print project, exciting no?  Well here’s some pics of the first print experiments and a few hints and tips for anyone wanting to give it a go themselves.

Step 1: We selected some wood grain effect lino hoping to recreate some of the markings in the final print.  The artwork was then stenciled onto the lino ready for cutting.  Remember to do it in reverse so the image will print  the way you originally drew it, this is most important with text. As you can see I neglected that on this attempt!

Step 2:  Time to start cutting.  Remember to cut out everything you don’t want to print.

Step 3:  Cutting can be a tiresome process so make sure you think hard about what image you want to print.  This image is a little too small and has too much detail to really print effectively, but it’s only an experiment.

Step 4:  Time to print. Roll on some ink, then lay your paper over and roll over the top.  You’ll have to have an experiment with how much ink you apply and how many times you print to get the desired effect (first print tends to be a little heavy and misses out details).  You can see from this one that too much of the wood grain effect we were after has come through so if you want your block colour to be consistent, make sure you use a smooth lino.  This piece of lino was also very soft so it was difficult to keep the cuts controlled.  Use a harder lino to make a more detailed print.  Have a go yourselves and send us your Sub ink print images.
